Getting married soon?  If you are, you are probably wondering what is available as far as
men's wedding bands go for yourself or your future husband.

The good news is that there are quite a few options for you to choose from regarding different materials, finishes, styles, prices, and quality.  The bad news is that you have to find something from that huge pool that you like, and not all rings are created equally.

When choosing materials, the main options for today's groom (in order from priciest to most affordable) are platinum, gold, silver, tungsten carbide, and titanium.  You are probably familiar with the first three, so I will focus primarily on the last two.  Titanium and tungsten carbide are relatively new entrants into the mens wedding ring arena.  Both have a silver/gray color to them and both tout their space age material technologies that make them better than the traditional wedding band materials.

Titanium rings are very lightweight, weighing less than a coin in the palm of your hand.  They do not tarnish, but can be polished by a trained professional or shop.  They are also very strong and only break under the most extreme conditions.  Titanium retailers often tout their strength to weigh ratio and the fact that they are used in aircraft as proof of their.  This combination of strength and low mass is often used as a selling point, but is actually their greatest flaw.  Titanium rings are so light that their low density allows to form easily on their surface.  These accumulate fast and will significantly reduce the polish and luster of your ring, making your three month old titanium ring look like decade old silver ring.  The rings are not structurally damaged, but the surface is visibly marred.  This can be very deflating to a newlywed that hoped their ring would last as long as their marriage and age just as beautifully.

Tungsten carbide rings have come in recently to fill the void that titanium rings created.  They are very strong but also very dense, making them extremely scratch resistant.  They also do not tarnish, making their polish almost permanent.  The weight feels about like six quarters in your palm, but is almost unnoticeable once placed on your finger.  They are slightly more expensive than titanium rings, due to the increased number of steps in the manufacturing process, but well worth the money if you are looking a ring to last a lifetime.  While there are many retailers of tungsten carbide rings out there, you must be aware of what you are buying.  Make sure a retailer is selling tungsten carbide rings, and not just tungsten ones.  It is the carbide that makes the tungsten so durable, without it, you are just buying another soft metal ring.  Also watch out for retailers that are using cobalt as the bonding agent in their tungsten carbide rings.  Cobalt will cause your ring to discolor over time as it reacts to the oils in your skin.  Any reputable retailer of tungsten carbide rings will use nickel as the bonding agent and will often state their rings are cobalt free on the front page or in the FAQ pages.

As far as finishes and styles go, you are not stuck with the round polished look of your fathers.  Today's rings are available polished, textured, satin, and matte finishes.  You can get rings with many different grooved patterns, beveled edges, precious metal inlays, faceted faces, convex and concave surfaces, and many other possibilities.

While there are many different options to choose from, the ring that is right for you is out there.  Go find it.
